We had over a dozen people show up for our sharing meeting a couple of weeks ago, and my, was it ever fun and productive! During introductions folks made announcements, shared resources, and identified projects and ideas for which they wanted some feedback.
What follows are some of the big ideas that emerged. [BTW, the next EEAY event is joining in with others at the regular Green Drinks at the Dirty Northern in Whitehorse, 5pm, on March 17...St, Patrick's Day now that's green!!!] Your comments welcome on any of these items...back to this list or to the individuals involved (links are live). Emily Payne and Erin Nicolardi are in the planning stages for an outdoor/environmental-oriented after-school program. Some ideas/thoughts:
Environment Yukon is looking for alternatives to the bi-annual Environment Fair that is usually held in April. Ideas:
Some past and current Environmental Education Association of the Yukon projects:
We spent some time brainstorming a new wolf-oriented school activity with Joanna Jack of WildWise Yukon. Some great ideas were generated! Other ideas shared:
Schools on Tundra is a program of Schools on Board, an ArcticNet outreach program based out of the University of Manitoba, and is hosted at the Churchill Northern Studies Centre located in Churchill, MB. This unique outreach program will take a small group of high school students and teachers from across Canada to Churchill, MB to join scientists as they conduct research on climate change in northern terrestrial environments. Students and teachers will work with and learn from scientists through lectures and workshops as well as actively conducting field and lab work. Students will be exposed to a variety of research disciplines including wetland ecology, marine biology, transport systems and geology. Participants will also have the opportunity to view beluga whales in Hudson Bay and learn about history through a variety of Parks Canada programming. The remote wilderness setting, rich history of the region and northern culture create an exceptional setting for learning about Canada's magnificent Arctic!
